Vehicles are the category where buyers most often lose money, and almost never on the vehicle itself. They lose it on a unit that cannot legally land, or on charges nobody mentioned until the goods were already at the port.
What actually governs a vehicle import into Nigeria
Read this before you pay a deposit anywhere, with us or with anybody else.
- Twelve-year age limit. Used vehicles more than twelve years old from year of manufacture are prohibited. For 2026 that makes 2014 the oldest permissible model year. A cheap 2011 truck is not a bargain, it is a vehicle that cannot clear.
- Left-hand drive. Nigeria drives on the right, and vehicles for normal registration are required to be left-hand drive. This catches buyers looking at United Kingdom and Japanese stock, where the cheapest units are right-hand drive.
- Green Tax surcharge, from 1 July 2026. Two per cent on engines from 2,000cc to 3,999cc, and four per cent from 4,000cc upward. Electric vehicles are exempt. A large-engine SUV now carries a cost a small saloon does not.
- Duty and levy are assessed on Customs valuation, not on what you paid. Customs values the vehicle on its own reference, so a low invoice does not produce a low duty. This is the single most common surprise.
Levy rates were revised recently and continue to move. We confirm the current applicable rates against your specific vehicle before quoting, rather than repeating a figure from a website. Anyone quoting you a flat percentage without asking the engine size, the model year and the Customs valuation is guessing.
