What CBM actually measures
CBM is cubic metres. It is how carriers measure the space your goods occupy in a container.
This matters because shipping is not priced on weight alone. A consignment can be light and still expensive to move, because what you are really paying for is room on a vessel. Whether you are bringing in a machine, a pallet of packaging or a few cartons of components, volume is what determines your options and much of your cost.
In plain terms, CBM answers one question: how much shipping space will my goods take up?
How to work it out
Multiply length by width by height, with every measurement converted to metres.
A carton measuring 100cm by 50cm by 40cm becomes 1.0 by 0.5 by 0.4, which gives 0.2 CBM. For multiple cartons, multiply by the quantity.
Measure carefully. Small errors compound quickly across a large consignment, and a shipment that is quoted on one figure and arrives at another is where unexpected charges begin.
Volume and weight are different questions
CBM measures space. Weight measures mass. They are not interchangeable and carriers care about both.
Light goods can fill a container long before they reach its weight limit. Dense goods such as machine parts or metal stock can reach the weight limit with the container half empty. Depending on the shipment, you may be charged on whichever figure is greater, which is why estimating from weight alone produces surprises.
LCL or FCL
Smaller consignments usually travel LCL, sharing a container with other importers’ cargo. You pay for the space you use, which suits modest volumes, and there is no container in your name to return afterwards.
Larger consignments justify FCL, a full container to yourself. This is normally the route for machinery and bulk purchases, and it comes with a consideration people forget: the empty container must be returned to the shipping line in Lagos, with detention charged for every day it is out and your deposit held until it is back.
Your CBM figure is what tells you which of the two you are actually looking at.
Why this matters before you order
The most common import mistake is treating the supplier’s price as the cost.
By the time goods reach your gate, freight, duty, VAT, the ECOWAS levy, CISS, clearing, port charges and inland haulage have all been added. A product that looked attractive at the factory can look very different once those are counted, and by then the money is committed.
Volume is the first input into that calculation. Get it right early and the rest of the estimate holds together.
