Services
Walk through many industrial estate in this country and you will find machines that never ran.
Some were the wrong specification from the day they were ordered. Some arrived missing the one component that mattered. Others work perfectly well and sit idle because nobody within three hundred kilometres can service them, or because a replacement part takes four months to arrive. Every one of them was bought by a careful person with a budget, doing his best with what he was able to find out.
That last part is what we keep returning to. The information a buyer needs is not secret. It is scattered, and a good deal of this trade earns its living from the fact that it stays scattered. A forwarder has no reason to explain how CBM is worked out. An agent quotes a clearing figure and does not break it down. The supplier abroad answers the question he was asked and no more.
So we write things down. What we learn on one job goes where the next person can use it, whether he becomes a client or never contacts us at all.
There is a self-interested reason for that and we would rather say it plainly. A buyer who understands his own purchase is easier to work with, argues about the right things, and comes back. The better reason is that Nigerian industry can handle complexity perfectly well. What it has been short of is the information everyone else already works from.
