Every petrol engine Audi puts in the Chinese-market Q5L displaces 1,984 cubic centimetres. Different states of tune, different badges, same block.
Nigeria’s green tax starts at 2,000cc. So the entire Q5L range, top to bottom, pays nothing. Not the lowest trim, not the highest. There is no version of this car that lands you in the 2 per cent band.
That is unusual. Most model ranges spread across a tax threshold and you have to know which engine you are buying. Here you do not.
The L is not decoration
The Chinese Q5 carries 88mm more wheelbase than the version sold elsewhere, and it went into the back seat. Audi did this for the same reason Mercedes stretched the C-Class: at this price point in China, the buyer is frequently in the rear.
The practical result in Nigeria is a mid-size SUV where an adult behind an adult is comfortable rather than tolerated. If your children are teenagers or your parents ride with you, you will notice it every trip.
About the oil consumption story
Someone will tell you Audis burn oil. There is a real history behind that, and it belongs to an earlier engine generation, not the one in these cars. Repeating it about a current Q5L is like warning someone off a modern Toyota because of something that happened in 1998.
What is worth doing, on any used car of any badge, is checking that the servicing was done on schedule. That tells you more than the brand’s reputation does.

Q5L or Q7
The honest split is seats. If you genuinely need a third row that adults can sit in, the Q7 is the vehicle and its V6 costs you 2 per cent plus fuel. If five seats cover your life, the Q5L gives you the same brand, better rear space than the standard Q5, no green tax, and lower consumption.
Against the X3, which is also under the threshold at 1,998cc, it comes down to which cabin you prefer and how much the rear legroom matters to you. Both are sensible.
Before you commit
Confirm the year against the age limit, get the Mandarin service history read, and check what the trim actually includes, because the Chinese range spans a wide equipment spread under similar badges.
