The X3’s four-cylinder turbo displaces 1,998 cubic centimetres.
The green tax that came into force on 1 July 2026 starts at 2,000cc. So the X3 misses it by two cubic centimetres, which is roughly the volume of a thimble, and pays nothing.
This is not clever engineering aimed at Nigeria. Engine families cluster just under round numbers because tax regimes all over the world have used displacement thresholds for decades. It just happens that the threshold Nigeria picked lands on the right side of BMW’s most common four-cylinder.
What that is worth
Compare it with the X5, which runs a 3.0 six and sits in the 2 per cent band. Two BMWs, same showroom, same country of origin, different tax outcomes because of engine size alone.
| X3 2.0 | X5 3.0 | |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 1,998cc | Around 3,000cc |
| Green tax | None | 2% |
| Used-vehicle levy since 1 July 2026 | 5% | 5% |
| Fuel consumption in traffic | Noticeably lower | Noticeably higher |
Add the fuel difference over three years of Lagos traffic and the gap widens well past the tax line.
Ground clearance, since everyone asks
BMW publishes 216mm for the X3. That is more than a great many crossovers people assume are taller, and it is enough for the potholes and the unfinished speed bumps that make Nigerian ownership what it is. It is not a bush vehicle and does not pretend to be.
Where the car was actually built
This is the one genuine thing to check. Until 2018 the X3 sold in China was imported. From 2018 BMW Brilliance began building it locally at Shenyang. So a Chinese-market X3 might be an imported car or a locally assembled one depending on the year, unlike the X5, which is South Carolina only.
Both are built to the same specification and neither is a problem. But it is a real difference between two cars that look identical on a listing, and it is the sort of thing you want established before you pay rather than discovered afterwards.
The other checks
The 12-year age limit means 2014 is the oldest year importable in 2026. Left-hand drive is required and Chinese-market cars are left-hand drive, so that one takes care of itself. Service records exist and are in Mandarin.
Whether it is the right car
The X3 suits someone who wants a German SUV, drives mostly on roads, and would rather not fund a larger engine’s fuel and tax for capability they will not use. That describes more buyers than admit it.
If what you want is the back-seat space of something longer, look at the long-wheelbase C-Class instead. Different shape, similar tax position.
