Poultry Feed Pellet Mills

Feed pellet mills are rated on soft formulations at ideal moisture. Change the formula and the same machine gives you a different number, sometimes a much smaller one.

Description

A pellet mill forces ground, conditioned feed through a die under roller pressure. Friction and steam bind it. The pellets come out hot, go through a cooler, then get screened so fines go back round again.

The rated capacity assumes a specific formulation, usually a soft one with plenty of starch. Feed heavy on fibre or high in protein pellets slower and wears the die faster. A mill quoted at 2 tons an hour on a standard broiler mash will not give you 2 tons an hour on a high-fibre layer ration, and the supplier isn't lying. They're quoting a different feed.

Die specification is where the real cost sits over time. Hole diameter sets your pellet size, which has to match the bird. Die material and hardness set how long it lasts. It's a consumable, so ask what a replacement costs before you buy the mill, not after.

Why your output won't match the brochure

Rated capacity is formulation-specific. Soft, starchy feed pellets fast. Fibrous or high-protein rations pellet slower and wear the die harder. Ask what formulation the rating is based on.

The die is a consumable. Dies wear out. Get the replacement cost and expected life before you commit, because over three years that number can rival the price of the mill.

Conditioning needs steam. Proper pelleting uses steam to bind and partially cook the feed. A mill without a conditioner makes weaker pellets that break up in the bag.

Fines come back to you. Some proportion of every batch comes out as dust and goes back through. Build that into your throughput expectations rather than being surprised by it.

Specification

These figures decide throughput and pellet quality. We confirm them against written supplier data before quoting.

Capacity Tons per hour, on a stated formulation. Always ask which one, because it changes the answer.
Die hole diameter Sets pellet size. Match it to the bird or animal. Broiler starter, grower and layer rations all want different sizes.
Main motor power kW. Pellet mills draw hard and the starting current is high, which matters for generator sizing.
Conditioner Whether steam conditioning is included, and its capacity. This is what makes pellets hold together.
Ring die or flat die Ring dies suit continuous commercial production. Flat dies are cheaper and suit smaller batch operations.
Cooler and screener Whether the quote includes them. Hot pellets straight into a bag will sweat and spoil.

We do not publish prices, because the landed figure depends on the specification, the Customs valuation and the exchange rate on the day you pay.

Minimum order

One mill. Most feed operations start with a single line matched to their own flock plus whatever they sell locally.

Adding a mixer and a grinder to make it a complete feed line is the usual next step, and we can quote those together.

What decides the right one

Your formulation first. Tell us what you're actually pelleting and we'll tell you what capacity that machine really gives you on your feed.

Then pellet size, which follows the animal. Getting this wrong means birds waste feed, and wasted feed is the whole margin in this business.

Then whether you need the full line. A pellet mill on its own still needs grinding and mixing ahead of it. Buyers sometimes discover this after the mill has already landed.

Common questions

What's the minimum order

One mill. Typical starting sizes run from 300kg to 2 tons an hour.

Why is my output lower than rated

Almost always formulation. Fibrous, high-protein feed pellets slower than the soft standard formulations these ratings are based on.

How long does a die last

Depends on formulation, hardness and how much grit is in your ingredients. We get the supplier's figure in writing and tell you the replacement cost up front.

Do I need a grinder and mixer too

For a complete feed operation, yes. The pellet mill is the last stage, not the whole line. We quote them together so nothing surprises you.

How is it shipped and installed

Containerised, with installation and commissioning support through your first production batch.
