Ice Block Making Machines

That 5-ton-a-day figure assumes the compressor never stops. Yours will stop. Between outages and diesel cost, most ice businesses here run maybe 14 to 18 hours, and that changes which machine you should buy.

Description

An ice block machine freezes water in moulds sitting in a chilled brine tank, or freezes it directly against evaporator plates. Brine tank systems are the common choice at this scale and they're more forgiving of the temperature swings you get here.

Capacity is quoted in tons per 24 hours, at a stated ambient and water temperature. Both of those assumptions run less favourably in Nigeria than in the factory where the machine was tested. Higher ambient means the compressor works harder for the same ice. So the gap between rated and real is wider in this category than in most.

Then there's power. Compressors draw hard at startup and they don't like being switched on and off repeatedly. A machine sized for continuous running, then run in six-hour bursts on a generator, gives you less ice and a shorter compressor life. Worth being honest about your power situation before you pick a capacity.

Why your daily output won't match the label

The rating assumes 24 hours of running. Count the hours you'll actually have power and work from there. On 16 hours you're getting roughly two-thirds of the rated figure at best.

Ambient temperature works against you. These machines are rated at temperatures cooler than a Nigerian afternoon. Hotter air means longer freezing cycles and more power per block.

Compressors hate stop-start. Frequent starting on unstable power shortens compressor life and costs you output. If your power comes and goes, tell us, because it changes what we'd recommend.

Water quality matters more than people expect. Cloudy or hard water gives cloudy ice that customers reject and scales up your system over time. Sometimes a filter is the cheapest fix on the whole install.

Specification

These figures decide output and running cost. We confirm them against written supplier data before quoting.

Capacity Tons per 24 hours at a stated ambient. Ask what ambient, because it's usually cooler than here.
Cooling type Brine tank or direct cooling. Brine is more forgiving of temperature swings and more common at this scale.
Compressor Make and rated power. This is the heart of the machine and the part that decides its working life.
Block size Weight per block, commonly 5kg to 50kg. Match this to how your customers buy.
Total connected load kW including compressor starting current. Get this right or your generator trips every time the compressor kicks in.
Refrigerant Which gas the system uses, and whether it's available locally for topping up.

We do not publish prices, because the landed figure depends on the specification, the Customs valuation and the exchange rate on the day you pay.

Minimum order

One machine, sized to what you can actually sell in a day and the power you can actually supply.

Second units usually come after a season of trading, once you know your real demand curve rather than your hoped-for one.

What decides the right one

Your power situation first. Hours available, grid or generator, and how stable. This drives everything else on this purchase.

Then daily demand, honestly. Ice is seasonal and perishable. Oversizing means paying to run a compressor for ice nobody buys.

Then block size, matched to your buyers. Fish traders, event suppliers and drink sellers all want different sizes, and switching later means new moulds.

Common questions

What's the minimum order

One machine. Common starting capacities run from 1 to 5 tons a day.

Can it run on a generator

Yes, but the set has to handle compressor starting current, which is well above running load. We size it with you before you buy either.

Why is my output below the rating

Usually running hours and ambient temperature. Both work against the factory figure here, which is why we quote you a realistic number instead.

What water do I need

Clean, reasonably soft water. Cloudy ice is a customer complaint and hard water scales the system. A filter is often worth the small extra cost.

How is it shipped and installed

Containerised, with installation and commissioning support so the first production cycle runs properly.
