Precision Blister Packaging

Tooling, changeover, NAFDAC are the three things that decide a blister line. What to settle before you order one, and what the regulator will want to see.

Blister Packaging Lines for Pharmaceutical Production

A blister line looks like a straightforward purchase. Film in, tablets in, sealed cards out, rated at so many blisters a minute. Most of the difficulty sits in places the rating does not mention.

Tooling is the decision, not the machine

The forming plate, sealing plate and punch tool are cut for a specific tablet or capsule. Change the product and you are buying tooling, waiting for it, and proving the new format runs properly before it can be sold.

So the question to answer before ordering is not how fast the line runs. It is how many products you intend to put through it in the next three years, and what a change of format will cost you in tooling and in downtime each time you make one. A line bought around a single product becomes an expensive constraint the moment the second product arrives.

We work that out with clients first, because it is the part that decides whether the machine still fits the business in year four.

Materials, and the sealing that has to hold

PVC is the ordinary base film. PVDC-coated or Aclar laminates are used where the product needs a real moisture barrier, and they cost more and behave differently on the same machine. Lidding is normally hard-tempered aluminium foil, heat-sealed.

Sealing temperature, dwell and pressure have to hold across a shift, not just at the start of one. A machine that seals cleanly in a demonstration and drifts after two hours produces packs that fail leak testing, and you will find that out in your own quality lab rather than in the supplier’s showroom. It is one of the things worth pressing a manufacturer on with specifics rather than accepting a general assurance.

What Nigerian regulation will actually ask of you

NAFDAC registration turns on your product and your facility, and packaging equipment sits inside that. Expect to account for the machine’s construction and product-contact surfaces, cleaning between batches and how contamination is prevented, batch and expiry coding, and the documentation showing the line does what you say it does.

The practical point is that documentation is part of the purchase. A manufacturer who supplies proper manuals, material certificates and factory acceptance records makes your registration a paperwork exercise. One who does not leaves you reconstructing it afterwards at your own cost. We ask for that at specification stage rather than after arrival, because it is far harder to obtain once the machine has shipped.

Sizing it honestly

Rated output assumes continuous running, correct feeding, no changeovers and no faults. Real output is lower, and how much lower depends on your operators, your power supply and how many formats you run in a week.

Size the line against what you will genuinely produce in a month, with a margin, rather than against the number on the specification sheet. Buying capacity you will not use costs money every year in maintenance, space and idle investment. Buying too little costs you the whole machine when you outgrow it.

How we work on a purchase like this

We settle what the line has to do, in your formats and at your real volumes. We find manufacturers rather than resellers, and check that certification belongs to the manufacturer and covers the model. Where the value justifies it and inspection is available, we arrange it before despatch.

Then you get one landed figure in Naira covering the goods, freight, duty and statutory charges, clearing, port costs and delivery to the stated point, with our fee shown beside it. Where your site is outside Lagos, the inland leg is quoted separately and paid by you, and we put that in writing rather than folding it into a headline number.

For machinery we stay through installation, start-up and the first production run, so faults appear while somebody who knows the equipment is still on site.

If a blister line is under consideration, the useful conversation is before the deposit. Tell us the products, the formats and the monthly volume, and we will tell you what it should cost and whether the purchase holds up.
