Industrial Plastic Shredders for Waste Recovery

A shredder is one of the few machines where a buyer can see the value immediately. Waste film, purge lumps, rejected mouldings and drums stop being a disposal problem and start being feedstock.

Getting the specification right is less obvious, because the same machine handles two different jobs very differently.

Start with what you are actually feeding it

A twin-shaft shredder tearing soft film is doing a different job from one breaking hard purge lumps or thick-walled drums, and a machine that is comfortable with one can struggle with the other.

So the first questions are about your material, not the machine. What are you shredding, in what shape and size, how contaminated is it, and how many kilograms an hour do you need through it. Contamination matters more than people expect. Sand, grit and metal fragments in reclaimed material take the edge off blades quickly, and blade replacement is the running cost that decides whether the machine pays.

The screen sets the output size, and the output size sets the throughput

Under the cutting chamber sits a screen. Its aperture decides how fine the shredded material comes out, because anything larger stays in the chamber and gets cut again.

A finer screen gives a smaller, more uniform particle, which is what you want if the material is going into a pelletiser. It also cuts throughput, because more material is being recirculated. A coarser screen moves more per hour and gives you a rougher product.

There is no correct answer in isolation. There is a correct answer for what happens next in your process, which is why the shredder and the pelletiser should be specified together rather than bought separately and made to fit afterwards.

Twin shaft, and why the gearbox matters

Twin-shaft cutting works at low speed and high torque, which is what makes it tolerant of awkward material. Two shafts of blades turn slowly toward each other, gripping and tearing rather than chopping at speed.

That puts the load on the gearbox and the bearings. It is where a cheap machine and a durable one differ, and it is not visible in a photograph. Ask about gearbox make and rating, blade material and hardness, blade cost and lead time, and whether hydraulic overload protection is fitted. A shredder that jams and shears something on a metal fragment is a common failure, and how the machine is protected against it is a fair question to put to a manufacturer.

Also ask what it draws. Connected load in kilowatts decides your cable sizing, your starter, and whether your generator can carry it alongside everything else running. That figure has stopped more installations than any other single number.

What it does to your costs

Resin is the largest cost in most plastics operations, and scrap is continuous. Trimmings, start-up waste and rejected rolls are material you have already paid for at full landed price.

Returning that to the process through a shredder and pelletiser is usually the fastest payback in the plant. Beyond your own waste, post-consumer collection and reprocessing is a business in its own right, and Nigerian regulation is moving in a direction that creates demand for it rather than reducing it. A producer already handling material recovery is positioned for a compliance regime rather than exposed to one.
