Viscosity, foam, cap feeding. These choose a filling line, not the bottle count, and getting them wrong is expensive.
Automatic Liquid Filling and Capping Lines
Ask most buyers what filling machine they need and they answer in bottles per hour. That is the last question to settle, not the first.
The liquid decides the machine.
Viscosity, foam and accuracy
A thin, free-flowing liquid, a syrup, a cream and a solvent are four different filling problems, and the filling principle changes with them.
Volumetric piston filling handles thicker products and gives good repeatability. Gravity or overflow filling suits thin, free-flowing liquids where a consistent fill level in the bottle matters more than an exact volume. Peristaltic filling keeps the product inside a tube and away from the machine, which is why it is used for sterile and high-value work. Pump filling covers a wide viscosity range.
Foaming is the one people forget. A product that foams needs bottom-up filling with a diving nozzle and a controlled fill speed, and a machine specified without accounting for it will overflow, underfill, or run so slowly that the rated output was meaningless.
Then there is what the liquid does to the machine. Solvents and aggressive chemicals need seals and contact parts chosen for them. Pharmaceutical and food products need contact surfaces you can justify to a regulator and a machine you can actually clean between batches.
Capping is where lines usually stall
Filling is generally the easier half. Capping is where a line loses its uptime.
Screw caps, pumps, droppers, trigger sprays and press-on caps are not interchangeable on the same head, and a machine set up for one may need parts changed for another. Torque has to be consistent, because too little leaks in transit and too much cracks the closure or strips the thread.
Cap feeding is the practical weak point. A cap sorter that jams on your particular closure will stop the line repeatedly, and it will do it in your factory rather than in a demonstration with clean, uniform caps.
So specify against the actual bottles and the actual closures you intend to use, and where it can be arranged, have the machine trialled on them. A supplier who wants your bottle and cap samples before quoting is telling you something good about how he works.
Bottle handling and format change
Bottles of different shapes and sizes need change parts: guides, star wheels, neck handling and nozzle positions. Ask what is included, what is extra, how long a changeover takes and who can do it.
A line that takes half a shift to change over is a line you will avoid changing over, which quietly narrows what your business is willing to make.
The output number, in context
Rated output assumes one product, one bottle, continuous running and no faults. Your real figure will be lower, and how much lower depends on changeovers, operators and power stability.
Size against your genuine monthly volume with a margin, not against the specification sheet. And do not buy more automation than your operation can maintain. A semi-automatic line running reliably beats a fully automatic one waiting on a part.
Where this fits with NAFDAC
For pharmaceutical, food and cosmetic work, the filling line sits inside your registration. Contact materials, cleanability, batch and expiry coding and the documentation showing the machine performs as stated all form part of what you will be asked to demonstrate.
We ask manufacturers for that documentation at specification stage, because obtaining it after the machine has landed is slow and sometimes impossible.
How we work on a purchase like this
We start with the product, the bottle and the closure rather than with a model number. We establish the specification a manufacturer can be held to, identify manufacturers rather than resellers, check that certification belongs to the manufacturer and covers the model, and arrange pre-despatch inspection where the value justifies it and inspection is available.
You get one landed figure in Naira covering goods, freight, duty and statutory charges, clearing, port costs and delivery to the stated point, with our fee itemised beside it. Where your site is outside Lagos, the inland leg is quoted separately and paid by you.
For machinery we stay through installation, start-up and the first production run.
Send us the product, the bottle and the cap, along with the volume you need to fill in a month. That is enough for us to tell you what machine it is and what it will cost you delivered.
