Most 2000W Inverters Hold About Half of That

Ask what a power inverter costs in Nigeria and you get a range so wide it tells you nothing.

The reason is that two boxes both marked 2000W can be entirely different machines. One holds 2000W all evening. The other reaches 2000W for about a second and a half while a motor starts, then settles somewhere near half of it.

Both numbers are printed truthfully. Only one of them is the machine you are buying.

Continuous against surge

Every inverter has two figures. Continuous output is what it holds indefinitely without overheating. Surge, sometimes called peak, is what it supplies for a brief moment while something with a motor gets going.

Marketing prefers surge because surge is bigger. When a seller quotes one number and will not break it into two, assume you are looking at surge and mentally halve it.

Surge matters because motors are rude. A fridge compressor, a water pump, a deep freezer and an air conditioner all pull three to seven times their running current in the instant they start. A pump rated 750W running can demand well over 2,000W for that instant. Size an inverter for the running load alone and it will trip every single time the pump kicks in, and the owner will conclude the inverter is faulty when it is simply too small.

Start from the load, not the wattage

List what you intend to run at the same time, and be honest about the phrase “at the same time”.

Load Running draw Note
Eight LED bulbs About 80W Negligible. Nobody sizes an inverter for bulbs.
Ceiling or standing fan 60 to 100W Small motor, modest surge
Laptop and router 80 to 120W Steady and well behaved
Television, 43 inch 70 to 120W Sensitive to waveform quality
Fridge 150 to 250W Surge several times this on start
Deep freezer 200 to 350W Same problem, larger
Water pump, 0.5 hp About 370W The surge is the whole design question
Pressing iron 1,000 to 2,200W Pure heat. Usually excluded on purpose.

Add the running figures for what genuinely runs together, then leave headroom for the largest surge on the list. That gives you the size. The marketing number does not.

As a rough starting point: 1000W covers lights, fans, phones, a laptop, a router and a small television, which suits a flat, an office or a shop, and does not cover a fridge. 2000W adds a fridge or a modest freezer if the surge rating is honest, and it is the most common household size in Nigeria. 3000W and above handles fridge and freezer together, a pump, or a small business with real equipment, and at that point waveform quality stops being optional.

Heating elements are the exception to all of it. Irons, kettles, water heaters and cookers turn electricity straight into heat and will flatten a battery bank faster than everything else in the house combined. Most people run those on mains and accept it.

Pure sine wave is not a luxury

Mains electricity is a smooth wave. A cheap inverter approximates it with a blocky stepped output called modified sine wave.

Plenty of things do not care. Plenty care a great deal. On modified sine wave, expect audible buzzing from fans and transformers, motors running hotter and dying sooner, interference on audio equipment, and some appliances with electronic controls that simply refuse to start.

A fridge compressor fed a rough waveform for two years is a fridge compressor with a shortened life. Replacing it costs considerably more than the inverter saved.

Our pure sine wave inverters are specified with honest continuous ratings and the surge figure stated separately, because the alternative is selling somebody a number rather than a machine.

The parts of the system people forget to budget

The inverter is rarely the largest cost. The battery bank is, and the battery bank answers a different question.

Wattage answers what you can switch on. Battery capacity answers for how long. Buyers confuse those two constantly and end up with a big inverter that runs for forty minutes.

Then the charge controller, if panels are involved. Economising there is the fastest way to shorten battery life, particularly on lithium banks running a controller with no lithium profile. Our MPPT and PWM controllers cover both chemistries properly.

And if the system charges from the sun rather than only from mains, the array is sized against your daily consumption rather than against the inverter. Monocrystalline panels hold their output better at Nigerian cell temperatures than polycrystalline does.

Two things settled before the order

Inverters and their batteries are electrical goods, so SONCAP certification is arranged at origin before shipment rather than sorted out afterwards. And lithium storage batteries move as dangerous goods under UN3480, with test documentation, correct marking and a declaration.

Both are settled before an order is placed. Goods that arrive without them create a problem that is slow and expensive to unwind.

If you are stocking rather than buying one

The specification decision becomes commercial rather than technical.

Cheap modified sine wave units sell quickly and come back. Warranty claims, returns and a reputation for selling things that buzz will cost you more than the margin gained, especially in a market where customers talk to each other constantly.

What is worth stocking is the unit whose continuous rating on the label is the rating the machine actually holds. That is verifiable before shipment, and it is precisely what pre-shipment inspection is for.

Tell us the load, not the wattage

List what you want to run and for how long. We will size the inverter, the battery bank and the array against it, then give you the landed figure in naira with every line itemised. If a Nigerian distributor beats importing at your quantity, we will say so.

The inverter page has the specification, or ask on WhatsApp.
