Sleepwear is the line most Nigerian traders never plan for and most of them sell out of when they happen to carry it.

There are three reasons, and they are worth understanding because together they make it an unusually good product to import.

It is a gift. A two-piece set in a box is the default present for a man from a wife, a sister or a child at Christmas, at Eid, at a birthday.

It is a necessity in this climate, because sleeping in day clothes in Lagos heat is not a plan anybody sticks to.

And it has almost no returns, because fit is forgiving in a way it never is on jeans.

Three fabrics, three buyers

Cotton jersey	Breathes, absorbs, comfortable through a hot night. The everyday volume line.	Weight. Too thin and it goes shapeless after ten washes.
Printed cotton and blends	The gift purchase. A set that looks like a present sells for more than one that looks like underwear.	Print durability and colour bleeding in a mixed wash.
Satin	Premium feel, sells on appearance, best margin of the three.	Snagging and seam slippage. Satin is unforgiving of cheap construction.

What decides quality here

The waistband elastic. The single most common failure in sleepwear. Cheap elastic loses tension within months and the trousers become unwearable while the fabric is perfectly fine.

Ask for the elastic specification, and ask whether there is a drawcord as well, because a drawcord saves the garment on the day the elastic finally goes.

Seam construction on satin. Satin slips at the seam if stitch density is inadequate, and then the seam opens. That is the fault that turns a premium-looking set into a complaint.

Fabric weight. Enough that light colours are not semi-transparent, which matters on a garment somebody answers the door in.

Shrinkage. Pre-shrunk with a residual figure. A set that comes back a size smaller is a gift that failed, and the person who gave it hears about it.

Buying for the gift season

This is the practical point that decides whether you profit from this line.

Production runs roughly 20 to 30 days and shipping another 30 to 40. Work backwards from December and the order needs placing around September at the latest. An order placed in November for Christmas arrives in January, when the reason people were buying has gone.

Presentation matters more here than in almost any other apparel line, precisely because it is a gift. A set arriving in a printed box or a decent bag sells for meaningfully more than the same set in a polybag.

Ask about packaging options at the quoting stage rather than afterwards. It costs the factory very little and it is where the margin lives.

Sizing, forgiving but not free

Sleepwear is loose by design, so a size slightly out is still wearable. That is why returns are low.

It does not mean sizing can be ignored. Get garment measurements per size in writing and weight the curve toward the middle and upper sizes as with every other line for this market.

Remember too that a gift buyer is guessing, and she will guess large rather than small. That shifts demand upward again.
